The Project

Our customer, one of the largest flour millers in Europe, has a number of state of the art factories across the UK where a focus on investment in cutting edge technology has created a highly efficient safe facility which has minimal reliance on manual handling.

Due to continued growth and expansion a new high-capacity repeatable automated sack opening solution was required to remove a production bottleneck when processing 25kg bags of various types of flour.

The design brief

In close collaboration with the customer, the following design brief was agreed;

End the unsafe and physically demanding practice of manually cutting and tipping sacks of flour.
Open and empty 300 sacks per hour without any product contamination.
Capable of handling bags of between 10kg and 25kg.
Eliminate the release of dust into the workspace in line with cGMP objectives.
Reduce manual handling operations to a minimum.
Ensure compatibility with client’s existing production line.
Provide a standalone solution with its own dedicated services – bag disposal and dust extraction.

The solution

Within 16 working weeks , Entecon delivered a bespoke ASO to satisfy the design brief which included these features:

Automated opening and emptying of 300 sacks per hour of various sack sizes ranging from 10kg to 25kg.
Integrated dust extraction unit, mounted on the top of the ASO, ensuring dust free operation.
1.5 meter infeed belt conveyor, integrated into the customer existing materials handling conveyor system.
Integrated waste bag discharge screw with continuous liner for easy bag disposal.
